COMMUNITY SERVICE

Disc Golf started in Waynesville with the donation of 10 portable baskets from INNOVA to the Waynesville Recreation Center.   The center contacted Tommy Holbrook, a local Professional Disc Golfer, and asked him to set up a demo course for a scheduled Family Fun Day.  The event was very successful, leading to a demo course being set up twice a week for people to play.  Throughout this process, Tommy gathered signatures on a petition for the Waynesville Recreation Center to get a permanent course.  The response was overwhelming and this began the quest for Waynesville's first Disc Golf Course!  The Recreation Center Management was very excited about the prospect of a permanent course but they didn't want to spend to much money on the project! Some new local players, Mike Franklin and Gary Powell were also passionate about the prospect of a permanent course.  Tommy along with his family and some friends raised money for 7 baskets, Healthy Haywood donated 2, the recreation center provided another 2, giving the community 11 great holes to play.  Disc Golf was growing fast in Waynesville, and the popularity led to the purchase of 7 more baskets through corporate donations.  After a re-design of the course, Tommy and some of the Recreation Department staff, along with a large group of volunteers including the local Waynesville Boy Scout Troop,  installed the remaining baskets to complete the 18 holes...thus bringing to life the Vance Street Park Disc Golf Course!  The course was renamed the Waynesville Disc Golf Course or "Windsville" to the local players, nicknamed for the unpredictable gusts of winds that occur during play.
